Penance is my original short film, created as an entry for HTC VIVE’s Best Shot Student Competition, where it won best performance. It also earned an honorable mention in the Black Emerging Screen Talent Film Competition. I wrote, directed, and produced the film myself, taking it from concept to completion in just one month.
The story was brought to life on a camera-tracked LED volume at StudioLab xR, using the VIVE Mars CamTrack system and Unreal Engine 5. This project was my first time stepping out from behind the computer to direct a full production on set, blending virtual and physical elements in real time.
From scripting and previsualization to coordinating a crew and capturing the final footage, Penance was both a creative and technical deep dive. It pushed me to grow as a filmmaker and helped me explore what’s possible with modern virtual production tools.
After waking in a desolate room with no memory and a volatile stranger looming over him, a man is forced into a tense confrontation where guilt, fear, and desperation spiral toward an inevitable breaking point.
Go behind the scenes of Penance to see how I brought the film to life using Unreal Engine 5 and the VIVE Mars CamTrack system on a tracked LED volume. This was my first time directing on set, and the video captures the full process — from planning to production — and the incredible team that helped make it happen.
